President: Lars Bode
Lars Bode, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Neonatology and in the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. Lars and his lab study biosynthesis and functions of human milk oligosaccharides (HMO), complex glycans that represent the third most abundant component in human milk. Recent research from the Bode lab indicates that HMO may reduce protozoan parasite infections, mother-to-child HIV transmission via breastfeeding, and the risk for preterm infant to develop necrotizing enterocolitis. President Elect: Sharon Donovan
Dr. Donovan received her PhD in Nutrition from UC Davis with Bo Lonnerdal. She completed a postdoc in Pediatrics at Stanford, before joining the faculty at the University of Illinois. She studies bioactive components in human milk and gut development, the microbiome and host-microbe interactions.
Past President: Rafael Perez-Escamilla
DR. RAFAEL PÉREZ-ESCAMILLA is Professor of Nutrition, Epidemiology & Public Health, and Director of the Office of Community Health, at the Yale School of Public Health. His public health nutrition and food security research has led to improvements in breastfeeding, iron deficiency anemia among infants (by delaying the clamping of the umbilical cord after birth), household food security measurement and outcomes, and community nutrition education programs worldwide. He is a world authority on the evidence base behind the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and community based breastfeeding peer counseling models. His current breastfeeding research focuses on the development of evidence-based models for the successful scaling up of comprehensive breastfeeding program at the national level. He has published 135 research articles and over 300 conference abstracts, book chapters, and technical reports. He has been an advisor to maternal-child health and nutrition programs funded by numerous UN Agencies, USA Government Agencies, philanthropic foundations and governments. He was awarded the ISRHML’s Ehrlich-Koldovsky Early Career Investigator award in 1999 and was a co-recipient of the 2012 Research and Surveillance Award from the Connecticut Breastfeeding Coalition. He obtained his BS in Chemical Engineering from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and his MS in Food Science and his PhD in Nutrition from the University of California at Davis.
Secretary: Donna Geddes
Associate Professor Donna Geddes has been a member of the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation of more than 15 years. In 2008 she received the Ehrlich-Koldovsky Award for her ground-breaking work with ultrasound imaging that provided a ‘window’ to the lactating breast and breastfeeding infant.
Since her election to the Executive Committee in 2010 she has actively participated by redesigning the website for the Society which allows for better communication and functionality such as application for membership, payment of dues and administration of ballots and surveys. She is also a member of the Communications Committee and has assisted in the co-ordination of the construction and delivery of a member survey.
Currently Donna is the Chief Investigator of a large human lactation research group of more than 20 members in Perth, Australia. Her research focuses on understanding milk synthesis, milk removal and the effects of human milk on infants. She runs comprehensive studies that combine multiple measurement techniques thereby providing powerful results. She has published 57 original articles, 12 scientific reviews and 10 book chapters.
Treasurer: Michelle McGuire
Michelle (Shelley) McGuire has been serving as Secretary/Treasurer of ISRHML since 2010. Since 1988, she has been an active member of the Society (having served on its Executive Committee from 2003-2005), and was a recipient of its Ehrlich-Koldovsky Award in 2002. Shelley received her undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Illinois, her masters degree in nutritional sciences from the same (under the mentorship of the late Drs. Mary Frances Picciano and John Milner), and her doctoral degree in human nutrition from Cornell University (under the mentorship of Dr. Kathleen Rasmussen). Since 1997, she has been a faculty member at Washington State University, where one of her “claims to fame” is teaching very large-enrollment, introductory nutrition courses for which she has authored two books: Nutritional Sciences – From Fundamentals to Foods (in its 3rd edition) and NUTR, both of which are published by Cengage. Shelley has also been actively involved in the American Society for Nutrition, having served as the Lactation RIS chair, a member of the Executive Committee, and the RIS Director. Currently, she is serving as a National Spokesperson for this Society. Dr. McGuire’s research has consistently focused on understanding the role of maternal nutrition on milk composition and maternal physiology, spanning areas including lipids, minerals, reproduction, and most recently milk microbiota. Shelley also has a long-term albeit informal history of working in finance, as she started working in a bank when she was in high school and in fact put herself through college largely with the income she earned working in this capacity. Indeed, Shelley is extremely comfortable with myriad aspects of finance and is a veritable fiscal hawk. These skills and interests have made her well suited for the position of ISRHML Secretary/Treasurer.
